When you do a quick Google search of “dentists and social media” there are pages of links, but few helpful examples about how individuals in this profession can take advantage of online tools. Perhaps one of the quirkiest results is David After Dentist (DAD), which features a full-blown site dedicated to the famous boy whose dad caught his post-surgery loopy behaviour on camera and shared it online to millions of chuckling viewers.

Although the DAD destination isn’t an example of the state of the dental community online, there are a few things its creators have done right to leverage the power of social media. From a dedicated blog to a Twitter feed to YouTube videos to t-shirt sales, the site is a good model of how to weave together multiple web tools to build an audience.

For dentists looking to build relationships with clients, here are five “Power Friending” tips to get your social media efforts on track.

1. Get up close and personal

While you might not be comfortable sharing details of your life, social media works best when your community considers you an online friend. In other words, share photos on your website and social networking accounts. These pictures should include moments from your professional experience, but they should also present a window into your personality.

2. Tweet it up

Although many of your clients may not yet be on Twitter, the community there is growing and it’s a great tool for anyone to get free access to an immediate stream of information from your practice. Whether your office is closing early for the day or you want to post a quick piece of information about dental news, use Twitter to broadcast tool but also to have ongoing conversations with existing and potential clients.

3. Offer expert advice

Many people only make it out to the dentist once or twice a year, but oral hygiene is a daily responsibility. Start up a blog where you can offer practical advice to your clients, from accurate information about teeth whitening to the best way to get your children into a good brushing routine. If you’re struggling for content ideas on a regular basis, consider posting a short tip a day, which doesn’t have to be more than a couple of sentences (and can then be shared on Facebook and Twitter).

4. Find fans on Facebook

Every dentist should have a Facebook page where he or she can connect with clients. Not only will this allow for personal and private messages, but it’s also a great destination to post contact information about your clinic and get recommendations that can then be easily shared with new clients on the world’s number one social networking site.

5. Make a great digital homebase

Although it’s critical to participate on sites such as Twitter and Facebook, and maybe even Foursquare if you want people to check in at your clinic (this will also allow you to offer them discounts), make sure that you have one key destination online where all your web activity lives – your website. Using a service such as Squarespace,  a site-building tool that costs as little as $8 a month, you can develop a Web 2.0 property that includes a blog and features links to all your social media feeds and accounts.

Once you get your social media strategy up and running, you might also want to considering booking appointments through these multiple avenues and inviting your clients to participate in this brave new world. Finally, remember to post some signage within your office to inform visitors about how they can use these digital platforms to develop a relationship with you that goes beyond their regular appointments.

Loan modifications are changes in the terms of a mortgage agreed upon by the borrower and the lender. The successful outcome though such adjustments is the avoidance of possible foreclosure through lower mortgage payments. The financial institution and the homeowner meet to determine what loan terms can be altered to the advantage of both parties. The hope is that individuals will be able to pay a smaller monthly payment based on their current income.

Lenders are usually motivated by profit to offer better options to borrowers, but the modifications can be made at their discretion. When an individual continues to make payments at a reduced rate, the financial institution accrues more income than if they had to foreclose on the property. Some lenders are mandated into appropriate modifications through federal programs available in low-income states. Mortgages are altered in several ways that include a reduction in interest rates, principals and late fees. The loan can also be extended for six months or more with a monthly payment cap based on the homeowner’s family income. Forbearance programs are obtainable for those needing a few more months to get back on good financial standing.

The process is not difficult and starts with a modification affidavit. The borrower then provides proof of income and tax returns. All documents are submitted to the lender to await approval.

With the housing crisis upon us, banks lose money if they have to foreclose on a property that is worth less than the borrower owes. The HAMP program believes struggling property owners should be given the chance to stay in their homes.

While in Los Angeles for my brother’s wedding, I was looking forward to staying at the Westlake Village Inn. But unfortunately, things went downhill even before we could check in.

Though the wedding itself was held off-site at a country club, a block of rooms were reserved at a discounted rate. With the group rate, I decided to treat myself to a suite with a king-size bed and gas fireplace (a little out of place in sunny L.A. but charming nonetheless).

But as I learned, hotels that cater to weddings and other special events can sometimes be under-staffed, leading guests who are not part of the event to fall through the cracks.

Here are 5 things you should know before reserving a group rate, which isn’t necessarily the best deal.

1. Your room might not be ready at check-in. Plan accordingly.

My family arrived promptly at check-in, which was at 3 p.m. The wedding rehearsal started at 5 p.m. at an off-site location. My family disbanded to shower and change, but my room wasn’t ready. So I left my cell phone number with the front desk so someone could notify me as soon as it was. I killed some time at one of the hotel bars, but an hour later, it was clear that the front desk wasn’t going to call.

While walking back to the lobby, I called the front desk, was put on hold, and then informed that my room was ready. By then I was already standing outside the lobby. But somehow during the few minutes when I hung up the phone and appeared again at the front desk, I was then told that my room still wasn’t ready. Sloppy service, but not a big deal, right?

After sorting out the confusion, I asked the front-desk manager what caused the delay. She told me that the hotel was fully booked the previous night and that “housekeeping just didn’t make it.” Hmm. You’d think that a hotel that caters to large wedding parties would anticipate the demand and be prepared with all hands on deck.

2. Group rates may equal inadequate service.

Under any other circumstances, these are minor inconveniences at best, but when you’re trying to get ready for a special event, you really do need the hotel to fulfill its end of the bargain. Or you may need to lower your standards.

After receiving my room key, I asked what the hotel typically offered guests whose rooms were not ready by check-in. Rather than apologizing for not having the room ready, the front-desk manager asked rather snottily: “What do you want? A bottle of wine or something?”

After I responded that I would accept anything that the hotel typically offers, she handed me one drink coupon even though there were two people staying in the room. I accepted the voucher, but didn’t end up redeeming it because we had already wasted an hour at the bar.

By the time I brought my luggage to the room, it was 4:15 p.m. — no time to shower. I threw on a dress, changed my shoes, and left the hotel annoyed but more concerned about not being late.

3. Housekeeping may not have time to clean your room.

The next day, I went for a morning swim and out for lunch. I returned to my room around 2 p.m. only to find that housekeeping hadn’t arrived yet. After two phone calls to the front desk to request more towels so I could actually shower before the ceremony, a hotel employee knocked on my door — 30 minutes later. By then, I’d already gone into the hallway to find someone who could give me towels. In those 30 minutes, it would’ve been faster for me to fetch spare towels from the pool — or to drive to the nearby mall and buy myself a new set.

After contacting Westlake Village Inn’s general manager after my underwhelming stay, I was told that a reasonable time to expect fresh towels was 15 minutes after the initial request. During any other visit, the slow service would’ve been mildly irritating. In my case, the sloppy service was interfering with my plans. I needed to drive to the wedding site by 4 p.m. Had I waited for housekeeping to arrive, I would’ve been late. Want fresh towels? You might have to get them yourself.

4. If you’re looking for great service, call ahead and ask if any large groups, conventions, or special events are scheduled during your hotel stay.

If you’re on a tight schedule, you may need to factor in some buffer time — or pick another hotel that can accommodate your schedule.

During my stays on a Friday and Saturday night, there were three on-site weddings each day. That’s a lot. It turns out that the Westlake Village Inn hosts about 200 weddings per year. I can see why the hotel is so popular; the grounds are lovely.

But as a guest who wasn’t part of the on-site wedding festivities, my simple requests sunk to the bottom of the heap. Is it really too much to expect that my room is ready by the stated check-in time or that I have clean towels in the room?

5. Don’t assume the group rate is the best deal.

If I’d known in advance just how under-staffed the Westlake Village Inn was going to be, I would’ve booked the Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village, where my brother had also reserved a block of rooms.

Or maybe I should’ve listened to my sister: She went to Priceline and successfully bid on a $62 room at the simple but pleasant Renaissance hotel about a 5-minute drive away — that’s about one-third of the price that I paid for my hotel, and with much better service, too.

One of the constant but often overlooked elements on a website’s design is the logo. The logo plays an important role not only in the design and branding of a website, but also in usability and SEO. Therefore, we wanted to take the opportunity to share 5 tips for designers to ensure that the logo is both utilized for usability and optimized for SEO.

Use a real, visible graphic
Crop the logo to remove all white space
Consider saving your logo with a transparent background
Link the logo to the homepage or root directory
Name and label your logo correctly

It’s Labor Day, the end of summer and probably the last time you’re going to get the grill out until next year. BBQ can be one of those things that turns unhealthy immediately but with these tips you can keep your cookout good for your body and delicious for your palate.

Here’s some healthy BBQ ideas and for more tips read after the gallery:

1. Go “Kebabing”

Kebabs are a great and easy way to grill meat and veggies. You can make chicken kebabs, shrimp kebabs, veggie kebabs, pork and beef kebabs. Always stick to using lean cuts of meat and let your kebab items marinate overnight for bold flavors without adding tons of fat, sugar and calories.

2. Replace Your Meat With Fish

While pork, red meat and chicken are typical BBQ faves, you can cut calories and fat while boning up on essential vitamins and nutrients by substituting other meats with fish. You can grill fish “steaks” or also wrap a seasoned fillet in foil and throw it on the grill.

Fish facts:

One ounce of tilapia contains 36 calories , 1 gram of fat (no saturated fat!) and 7 grams of protein.
One ounce of salmon contains 58 calories, 3 grams of fat (1 gram of saturated fat) and 6 grams of protein.
One ounce of swordfish contains 43 calories, 1 gram of fat and 7 grams of protein.

3. Grill Corn, Asparagus, Eggplant, Zucchini and Other Veggies

Veggies are ideal for grilling because you can’t really over grill them and if you use a marinade they will taste delicious and keep you full while cutting down on calories and fat.

4. Gorge On Salads

We’re not talking about potato salad here. Fresh green salads are a great starter option for your BBQ to help get you full before the big feast. Try a Greek salad or something more exotic. Don’t forget you can also make a fruit salad as well.

5. Skip The Ice Cream And Have A Parfait

Mixing some fruit with some yogurt and granola is a much healthier alternative to ice cream for desert. Here are some really great low-cal and low-fat recipes to try.

6. Take The Skin Off Your Chicken

Taking the skin off chicken before you cook makes it way healthier than leaving the skin on. Don’t believe us? Take a look at the nutrition facts:

4 ounces of roasted chicken breast with skin contains 223 calories, 8.8 grams of fat, and 2.5 grams of saturated fat
4 ounces of roasted chicken breast WITHOUT skin contains 187 calories, 4 grams of fat, and 1.2 grams of saturated fat

If that’s not enough reason to go skinless then we don’t know what else is!

7. Go Vegetarian

Maybe you have some vegetarians attending your BBQ, why not go veggie with them! Veggie burgers and dogs are usually soy or gluten-based and are low in saturated fats compared to hamburger meat. Hamburgers generally contain about 7 grams of saturated fat while products like Bocca and Morningstar Farms contain 0-1 grams of saturated fat.

8. If You Love The Meat, Trim The Fat!

Not only is the fat on meat artery clogging but also can increase your risk of getting cancer. Grilling contains lots of cancer risks due to the carcinogens produced. You can lower these risks by trimming the fat from your meat. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) formation is hard to get around but more are produced when smoke is produced by fat dripping from meat onto the grill.

9. Make Your Own BBQ Sauce

Commercial BBQ sauces are loaded with sugar (most likely high fructose corn syrup). To avoid this, try making your own. Here’s 30 recipes that will have you satisfied and thanking us later for not inducing a comatose sugar high.
